1. Cane Technology

Objective

This contest aims at providing the contestants an opportunity to demonstrate their technical competence in cane technology using raw cane by copying a given sample article of domestic use.

Task

The participants will be required to fabricate any one of the following:

  • Bread Basket
  • Flower Basket with a handle
  • Lamp Shade

Special Instructions

  • The size of the article fabricated by the competitors is required to be similar to the size of the sample provided.
  • Contestants are required to follow the pattern faithfully.

Material

  • Raw (RATTAN) cane in the required size and quantity will be provided by the organizers.
  • The raw cane so provided will be immersed in water at night before for ease of working.
  • Incase any contestant requires raw cane, the same will be provided, on request at site.
  • Varnish, brush and hand spray guns will be provided at site.

Work Environment

Normally all cane working will be required to be done on a suitable covered floor. In case of any special working conditions requirement, the same should be asked for twenty four hours prior to the contest.

Equipment and Tools

  • Contestants are required to bring their own hand tools.
  • The organizers will not provide any tools or equipment for this contest at site.

Note: Contestants are requested to bring their own tools but the list of tools must be presented to the committee for approval before the contest. The organizers reserve the right of not allowing contestants to use any tool if that is considered to be giving the contestant an undue advantage.

. PC Assembly

Objective

The aim of this contest is to allow the contestants to demonstrate their technical competence in assembling a personal computer (PC) out of components hardware and software provided at site.

Task

Contestants are required to assemble from individual components of PC, a working personal desktop computer. The final task is to make the computer run on Windows 2000. The hardware faults, if any, need to be diagnosed and corrected.

Special Instructions

Marks will be deducted if any component is damaged by the contestant during assembly procedure.

3. Computer Programming

Objective

To provide an opportunity to contestants to demonstrate their knowledge, skill and competence in computer programming.

Task

Participants should be able to write a logically correct program with error handling and Graphic User Interface. The software problem would be from under mentioned categories:
a) File & database handling
b) Network (TCP / IP) related problems
c) Logical and analytical problems.

Special Instructions

The above task is the syllabus for practice. Actual task will be given on the day of competition. The task assigned will be within the ambit of the above task syllabus.

The package developed should be user friendly. The software JAWS will be loaded for the visually impaired contestants.

Task

To create a well composed and informative WEB page, having following facilities:-
a) Minimum 5 Hyper Linked content pages
b) Use Login / password for specific content viewing.
c) Registration facility for the new user (from details may have name, date of birth etc.).
d) Animation with GIF animator or Dream weaver / Flash.

Special Instructions

The above task is by way of a syllabus for practice. Actual task will be given on the day of the competition and will be within the ambit of the above provisions.

5. English Text Processing

Objective

The objective of this contest is to give participants an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, ability and skill in using a word processor and to demonstrate their typing skill.

Task

The assignment will be divided into two tasks.

Task 1

Typed matter (4 pages) will be provided to the candidates on computer. This document will have to be formatted according to the instructions. These instructions will be provided to the candidates in Braille, large print, normal print or computer disk. Marks will be awarded to the candidates according to the scheme of marks allocated for different features of word processing to be used in completion of this task. These features include table of contents, fonts & styles, inserting table, column, headers and footers, inserting picture etc.

Task 2

Printed text will be given to the candidates. The candidates will have to type as much as they can in 30 minutes. Volunteer readers will be provided to persons with vision impairment to read out the given text.

Note: Candidates may use their own assistant for reading the text.

Special Instructions

  • File should be saved periodically.
  • Candidates with vision impairment will have to indicate the choice of their screen reader along with their application of participation. In the absence of such information the machines will be loaded with the Jaws for Windows Screen Reading Software.
  • For competition only IBM compatible PCs will be used.

Word Processing Software

The organizing committee will install the word processing software i.e. MS-Office Suite (containing Ms Word, Excel, Power Point, Access).

Work Environment

Machines will be placed on tables. In case of a special working conditions requirement, the same should be asked for twenty four hours prior to the contest. Candidates with vision impairment will be allowed to sit on the machine 30 minutes before they start off the assignment familiarize themselves with the machine and the software already loaded, to configure the machines and the screen reader parameter according to their preference.

Maximum time allocated for task 1 would be 60 minutes and for task 2 would be 30 minutes.

6. CAD ? Engineering Drawing

Objective

The aim of the test is to allow the participants to demonstrate their competence in the use of CAD Engineering drawings. The test designed in a manner that the tasks are trade neutral i.e the tasks do not have a bias towards a particular trade such as Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering etc.

Task

The tasks cover the entire gamut of assignments that are typically required to be carried out in CAD production environment. These are outlined below:
a. Drawing & Editing: The contestants will be given a printed drawing file consisting of primary geometric entities such as lines, arcs, ellipses, circles and objects etc. The task will require the contestant to:
i. Organize the drawing correctly in terms of layer creation with specified names, colors and line-types.
ii. Reproduce the geometric figure as shown in the sample printed drawing on specified layers.
iii. Should be able to show Elevation & Plan view.
iv. Create a block entity with from the figure completed from the above tasks.

b. Dimensioning: The contestants will be required to dimension the drawing in a manner suitable to be printed on a A4 sized paper at a specified scale. Linear and Angular dimensioning will be required to be carried out.

c. Retrieving Information: This section will determine the ability of the contestant to retrieve information from the drawing created including area, length and distance.

d. Annotation: The contestant will annotate the drawing with the information retrieved from the section C above and other text as per the sample drawing. The contestant will also be required to insert a title block entity (which will be a part of the prototype drawing file supplied to him) and input basic time ,date and scale information into the title block. All the text items will be input in a manner so as to print at a specified height at the specified scale.

e. Printing: The drawing shall be set up by the contestant to print on A4 size paper at a specified scale. This section will test the contestant?s understanding of the printing and plotting parameters as presented in the AutoCAD plot dialogue including plot scale, printer assignment, page set up and plot style assignment.

Special Instructions

  • Metric system of measurement will be used for all assignments and all dimensions will be expressed in Millimeters.
  • Standard prototype drawings will be provided to all contestants to begin the task assignments.
  • Each contestant will be provided with IBM compatible PC with AutoCAD 2000 software running under MS windows operating system.

Equipment and Software

The Organising Committee in the contest will provide the following software to each of the contestants.

Objective

The objective is to prepare Desktop Publishing for print media

Task

8. Ceramics (updated on October 8, 2003)

Objective

The aim of this contest is to provide participants an opportunity to demonstrate the technical skill and creativity in fabricating and finishing a ceramic article of given specifications.

Task

Competitors will be required to shape mould and fabricate one of the following:

  • A ceramic milk jug - dimension 7?- 9? an efficient handle and spout are necessary.
  • A mug - dimension 4?- 6? with an efficient handle.
  • A flower vase - dimension 6?- 8?.

Special Instructions

Note: As it is not possible to fabricate (mould) dry and glaze an item to the finished stage within the stipulated time, it has been decided to judge the fabrication, moulding in one session, decoration/glazing in the second session.

Material

  • Stoneware/ terracotta clay will be made available.
  • A set of paintbrushes, stains, slips and glaze for decoration will be made available.

Work Environment

  • Worktables and potters wheels (manual and motorized) will be available at competition site.
  • Secure arrangements for drying fabricated items will be provided
  • Contestants have the option to hand fabricate if they so desire.

Equipment

As stated above, potters wheels and kiln will be provided.

Note 1: Participants are requested to bring their own standard ceramic tools but the list of tools must be presented to the committee for approval before the contest. Objective

The objective is to give contestants an opportunity to demonstrate their prowess, skill and creativity in hand painting on silk.

Task

Participants will be required to hand paint a given scarf or a stole, free hand, using any technique

? Contestants can use as many colours as they desire.
? Any designs would be acceptable as long as they are done free hand.
? Only three types of paints will be provided:
a) Fabric colour
b) Frolica
c) Oil colours
? The contestants are not allowed to trace a pattern

A scarf of 36? x 36? and a stole of 2 ½ meters with pre-finished edges will be provided.
? Oil colours, fabric colours, frolica tubes, thinner, water and necessary containers will be provided.

12. Tie and Dye

Objective

This contest is designed for participants to demonstrate their skill in creating a tie and dye technique pattern on a piece of given cloth.

Task

The task is to design and dye one piece of the following:

  • Cotton Stole (175 cm x 50 cm)
  • Scarf ( 90 cm x 90 cm)
  • Cushion Covers (45 cm x 45 cm) by tie and dye technique.

Special Instructions

  • Contestants may use not less than three colours.
  • Base colour of the cloth will not be counted as one of the three colours.

Materials

  • Cotton cloth with pre finished edges
  • Colours - A set of 12 dyes, direct dyes
  • Cotton thread for tying
  • Medium- Grams, stones, rajma, chanas, pulses, bell pins and round marbles in 3 sizes rice, twine, some wooden sticks, all pins, coins of different sizes. However the contestants can bring their own artifices for creating patterns.
  • Edges to be pekoed.

Note: Participants are requested to bring their own aprons and lab coats or any required tools but the list of tools must be presented to the committee for approval before the contest. The organizers reserve the right of not allowing contestants to use any tool if that is considered to be giving the contestant an undue advantage.

Contestants are required to use a minimum of three colours other than the base colour of the fabric provided.

Objective

The aim of this task assignment is to judge the contestants ability in designing and fabricating and finishing a piece of jewellery using traditional hand tools and equipments.

Task

? Fabricate a broach cum pendant given according to the design on paper with similar dimensions handed over at the contest site (needle cum clasp).
? Design a pendant as given on the worksheet by adding of stones with proper settings in the fabricated piece according to your own imagination.

Special Instructions

To fabricate the pendant inclusive of stones and there respective settings using your own imagination.

15. Electronic Assembly and Testing

Objective

To judge competitor?s skills in understanding the functioning of a given circuit, assembling and insuring functionality /intended operation of an electronic gadget.

Task

The following three tasks are for practice by way of a syllabus only :

Task one
The task is to understand the functional principle, assemble and then establish functionality of Basic Flip-Flop Tester, the circuit diagram of which is given. The functionality of the gadget will be tested on IC type nos. 7473 (Dual JK Flip-Flop of TTL family) and 4027 (Dual JK Flip-Flop of CMOS family).

Task two
The task is to understand the functional principle, assemble and then establish functionality of Basic Digital Logic Gate Tester, the circuit diagram of which is given (Fig.2). The functionality of the gadget will be tested will be tested on IC type nos. 7400 (Quad 2-input NAND-gate of TTL family), 4081 (Quad 2-input AND-gate of CMOS family) and 7432 (Quad 2-input OR-gate of TTL family).

The task is to understand the functional principle, assemble and then establish functionality of Human Reaction Time Measuring Gadget, the circuit diagram of which is given (Fig. 3)

17. Photography: Studio Portraits

Objective

The objective is to allow the participants to demonstrate professional competence in the production of good Portraits (Bust).

Task

The assignment for the contestant is to produce a portrait ( bust of a live model).

Special Instructions

  • Portraits will be taken in an existing studio, camera, studio lights, backgrounds and seating arrangement will be made available.
  • No participant can see others working.
  • All the facilities provided will be the same for all participants. No additional equipment will be allowed.

18. Photography (Contest Coverage)

Objective

The objective is to allow the participants to demonstrate professional competence in the events coverage - Photo Journalism.

Task

To photograph the various events, arrangements and ambience of the abilympics.

Equipment and Materials

The organizers will provide free of cost:

  • One roll (400 ASA) 35 mm of colour negative film will be given per participant each day for which processing and printing will be done by the organizing committee.
  • Participants should bring their own 35 mm camera, equipment and related accessories of their own choice.

Allocated Time

The event will start on 24th November 2003 at 10.30 a.m. The contestants are required to collect the roll from the Convenor at 9.00 a.m.

Special Note : Participants are requested to submit the exposed roll for processing and printing to the organizing committee, everyday at 4.00 p.m.
All the negatives and prints will become the property of the organizers, which will be used only for the promotion of Abilympics.

Objective

The objective is to allow the contestants to demonstrate their skills and creativity in decorating a cake according to the assigned topic.

Task

Design a special shape and decorate the cake from semi-finished products. Each contestant will decorate the cake for one the following themes:

Special Instructions

  • Cakes may be cut into different shapes prior to the direction. The finished product should weigh 1 kg.

Objective

To illustrate the concepts of visual arts through floral arrangements and to provide opportunities of exploring and experimenting with materials and tools in order to express their personal feelings towards their environment.

Task

Create an arrangement in the spirit of Japanese Ikebana.

Special Instructions

  • Plants (fresh or dried) and accessories are allowed
  • The cut-ends of all fresh plant material must be in water retaining material.
  • All arrangements will be shown on a natural cream or white colour background which will be provided.
  • Participants are requested to arrange their exhibits at the exhibition ground. No pre-arranged exhibits will be accepted.
  • Rose thorns must be removed.
  • Contestant will be provided flowers and fresh plants at the contest site by the organisers.
  • All contestants are required to leave the area neat and clean. Waste bins will be provided.
